This beach provides both first timers with a safe and invigorating environment to learn in as well as providing some world class waves for the more experienced surfers. We offer lessons for new surfers and coaching for the more advanced levels looking to up their skills in the water.

Shingles

Shingles is a sandy/shingle beach break up the mouth of the Buller River, on the north bank of the river. This is one of the only fresh water breaks in New Zealand. Needs a big North West swell to get working. Right hand point break that is nice and mellow on the lower tide and good and wally on the higher tide, some times hollow too. Good for all surfers.

Fox River

Fox River is a left-hand point break on a mostly sandy beach off the rocks at the Fox River Mouth. The wave breaks over the rocks at the southern end of the beach, then peels across the beach. It is a long, wally wave with several sections to play. You can go through the cave across the river on the side of the point and come out the end of the point to paddle out behind the rocks. Good for surfers of all levels. River mouths often have strong currents and rips, so be extra careful. 

Waimaire

Waimaire is a beach break, river mouth break on a soft shingle beach. There are lots of peaks along the beach to choose from, offering both right and left handers. the wave can be variable depending on shingle banks and swell direction. It can produce good wally, or hollow waves. Best for intermediate to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents and rips, so watch out.

Karamea

Karamea is a beach break and river mouth bar on a soft shingle beach. You can surf any where along this section of coastline where you will find various peaks to choose from all the way along. The wave is usually punchy and can get a hollow shorey. Best for intermediate to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents and rips, so watch out.

Little Wanganui

Little Wanganui is a beach break on a golden sand beach, with a river mouth at the southern end of the beach. You can surf anywhere along this section of coastline, there are lots of peaks to choose from scattered down the beach, offering both left and right handers. The wave has a punchy drop with good wally rides, and often gets a hollow shorey. Best for intermediate to expert surfers. 

Carters Beach

Carters Beach is a sandy beach break along the coast west of the Buller River, just out front of the Airport. Lots of peaks down the beach with both right and lefts handers. peaky, punchy waves, can be more of a shore break. Good for all surfers.

Westport Breakwater

Westport Breakwater is located at the mouth of the Buller River. It can be surfed on either side of the breakwater and both sides feature a sandy beach with a peaky beach break. Westport Breakwater waves offer both right and left-handers and produce punchy waves with steep, gnarly drop-ins. Most suitable for intermediate to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents and rips, so be extra careful.
