Awana Bay

Awana Bay is a sandy beach break located north of Kaitoke Beach, on the east coast of Great Barrier Island.  There are several peaks along the beach with both right and left-handers. There is a good left-hander at the northen end of the beach at the river mouth and a good right-hander at the southern end of the beach. The wave is punchy and hollow, with barrels on offer. Best for intermediate to expert surfers. Beach can get popular in the summer, so watch out for swimmers.

Directions 

Awana Bay is located north of Kaitoke Beach on the east coast of Great Barrier Island. This is approximately a 3-4 hour ferry ride out east of Auckland. From Auckland, take one of the ferries (Fullers or Sealink are options) to Great Barrier Island. Approximate journey is 3-4 hours, depending which ferry you choose and which destination at which you arrive. A quicker option is to fly to Great Barrier Island. From Tryphena Harbour, it is a 30 minute drive to Awana Bay. Drive north on Shoal Bay Road to the Tryphena Township. In Tryphena, turn right onto Medland Road. Turn left to stay on Medland Road. Turn right to stay on Medland Road, then left onto Walter Blackwell Road. Continue onto Hector Sanderson Road. Turn right onto Blind Bay Road, then continue onto Gray Road. Turn right to stay on Gray Road and continue onto Aotea Road, then stop at Awana Bay.
